Slope Stabilization Engineering

Zoar Valley Road – Slope Failure

A slope failure encroached on Zoar Valley Road at this site in the Town of Concord, New York. The site is located at a 90 degree bend in Cattaraugus Creek. McMahon & Mann worked with Clark Patterson Lee to develop a remedial design for this section of Zoar Valley Road. Test borings revealed a zone of soft clay beneath the road. The instability of the road was attributed to the presence of the soft clay, erosion of the road embankment from the creek and inadequate surface drainage.

The remedial design included removing portions of the soft clay, installing subsurface drainage trenches, installing a geosynthetic reinforced slope, improved surface drainage and re-directive measures in Cattaraugus Creek to limit erosive forces on the slope beneath the roadway. The re-directive measures include a series of bend way weirs to guide the flow around the bend and to maintain the higher flows away from the bank.
